The MERLIN-A is a vehicle mounted radiation detection system consisting of four detection modules. They are coarse collimated providing coverage in four quadrants around the vehicle. As the vehicle moves through a radiation area, the detectors indicate the strength and general direction of the radiation. A set of measurements made while the vehicle drives around and through a radiation area are processed to create a radiation activity map of the region.
The real-time mapping software is a new development. The purpose of the UCSD test is to exercise this new software and demonstrate that the data is captured as expected, and can be processed to determine the location of a point source as the vehicle drives past and around that source.
