This field class is for a second-year degree-level BSc geographers with interests in dryland morphology, climate change, Earth sciences and biodiversity. The Mojave desert provides a wide range of textbook desert landforms and geological features within a relatively small area. The region also features a rich dryland biodiversity and provide habitats for a range of animals and plants adapted to the arid conditions. The field class content builds on existing Earth landscape dynamics, environmental change and biodiversity topics from years one and two and provides practical preparation for the final year undergraduate thesis. Students will visit a range of sites across the Mojave reserve to undergo training in observation, data collection and data recording, as well as the design of qualitative and quantitive research. we plan to visit during our stay Cima volcanic field; Hole in the wall, Kelso dunes, Cima Dome, Cedar Canyon road, Peak locations associated with a former Lake Manix rainbow Canyon Afton Canyon Amboy crater and Death Valley. We have been staying at Zzyxz annually since 2014.
