CSU Desert Studies Center, Zzyzx
01 Mar, 12 PM - 06 Mar, 12 PM
Our class, the Habitable Planet Lab, explores the use of extreme environments on Earth as analogs for the exploration of other planets in the solar system. Throughout the course, we will be discussing types of planetary analogs and how they can be used for research, method and instrument development, and logistical simulations (i.e. the HI-SEAS facility on Mauna Loa). At the same time we will discuss the relationship between space exploration and environmental stewardship, and how our exploration of these environments can be synergistic with climate research and conservation advocacy. Our time at the Desert Studies Center will be used to take the students on a week-long, hands-on journey to several noteworthy planetary analog sites and key formations in the Mojave Desert--from visiting the famous Kelso Dunes to discussing the mysterious microbiological origins of desert pavement. We will not be disturbing or removing any materials from the Desert Studies Center or the surrounding area.
