The fieldwork component of my thesis research will take place along the shorelines of pluvial Lake Mojave. This will consist of myself, my thesis advisor Dr. Knell, and two CSUF students visiting Lake Mojave for 10 days. We will visit 12 archaeological sites along the shorelines of pluvial Lake Mojave that Dr. Knell previously identified and inventoried, so I know the approximate number of artifacts at each site that can be geochemically analyzed using CSU Fullerton's pXRF machine (portable X-ray Fluorescence spectrometry). I will geochemically analyze at least 60% of all fine grained volcanic and obsidian lithic tools, cores, and debitage from the 12 sites for a total artifact sample of at least 360 items.
After gathering this data, I will analyze the geochemical signatures obtained and assign as many artifacts as possible to known geologic source areas. This will involve computer-based analysis of the trace elements to assign artifacts to sources. This research will provide a broader understanding of the strategies Paleoindians used when transporting lithic material and tools to Lake Mojave.
