Coal Oil Point Natural Reserve
16 Sep, 08 AM - 16 Sep, 05 PM
Hello. I am submitting this request on behalf of the City of Santa Barbara. We collected seeds at COPR for this same project last year and at the beginning of this year.
The City is currently seeking to collect seeds and cuttings for a dune habitat restoration project on East Beach. This project is mitigation for a weir box that will be constructed on east beach as part of the desal project. The City has a CDP for the project from the CCC (9-19-1250), and in order to vest the permit, the City needs to get the mitigation in the ground by July 2022. The City doesn’t plan to construct right away due to the drought – taking the plant offline right now in order to construct is not the best for our water supply situation.
The City is looking for seeds from the following species: red sand verbena, pink sand verbena, silver bur ragweed, beach suncup, and seacliff buckwheat for the mitigation effort, which we believe exists at the UCSB Coal Oil Point Reserve. Rincon would like to respectfully request on behalf of the City, and in partnership with Channel Islands Restoration (who would do the collection), that we may be able to collect seeds and cuttings from COPR. More information can be supplied upon request. Thank you for your consideration.
