Santa Cruz Island Reserve

We will install a particulate matter air monitoring device. These devices are already installed on our campus and on Catalina Island. Part of the purpose of the visit is to discuss with the students sources of particulate matter, which can include vehicles. Our visit will expose students to an environment with much clearer, cleaner air compared to what our students see in the LA Basin.
Additionally, we will take students around the island to observe the geologic features of the island- pointing out structural features like the central valley fault, and various rock types (e.g. sedimentary rocks overlain by volcanic rocks)
SMC is a minority serving institution with 39% Latinx population, our trip exposes students who otherwise would not gives students who would otherwise not get a chance to
