Santa Cruz Island Reserve

01 Aug, 11 AM - 06 Aug, 04 PM

I surveyed, banded and radio- tracked pallid bats on Santa Cruz Island between 1973-1985. Pallid bats are now a Species of Special Concern for CDFW, and there is a need to assess their population status throughout California. I will be counting bats in the buildings of Middle ranch to compare with research from over 40 years ago. In 2017 we captured juvenile red bats on SCI. Genetic analysis has show that these are eastern red bats not the expected western red bats (L. blossevillii). In 2017 we installed two long-term bat detectors on the SCI to monitor bat species and year-round activity. Annually we need to come out to SCI to perform maintenance on this equipment.
