Santa Cruz Island Reserve
05 Nov, 11 AM - 08 Nov, 03 PM
We will sample on Santa Cruz Island at Prisoners Harbor, Tinkers Cove, Pelican Trail (start), Valley Anchorage (https://santacruz.nrs.ucsb.edu/visiting/maps). We will collect approximately 12 individuals per species per location by hand using simple tools like paint scrappers and chisels when necessary. With molluscs and crustaceans, the whole animal will be taken. For other taxa (anemone, sea star, kelp, urchin) we will non-lethally sample a small piece of tissue and release the individual. Our sampling will be targeted with no by-catch or damage to the physical location or surrounding plants and animals. The tissue samples we collect will be preserved in non-toxic buffers or on ice and later used for DNA sequencing. Sequence data generated as part of the project will be made publicly available through the National Center for Biotechnology Information https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov
