Landels-Hill Big Creek Reserve
17 Apr, 12 PM - 19 Apr, 12 PM
In this field-lab based class, we will conduct field labs that provide students with training and experience in biological research techniques in the field. If researchers wish to, we have the students learn about their projects and assist in data collection for them. Field labs may include:
1. Stream Ecology: students will catch and release stream insects (using aquarium dip nets), visually survey fish populations (on snorkel or stream-side), and conduct water quality monitoring (measure DO, current speed, pH, etc). No animals or plants will be killed or introduced.
2. Plant Ecotones: students will do terrestrial surveys of plant diversity (counts within transects & quadrats), tree diameter (using measuring tape to measure tree diameter at chest height).
3. Otter & Bird Ecology: Students will conduct observations of otters & shore/seabirds from shore – counts and behavior will be recorded.
4. Nearshore Ecology: students will snorkel within the stream and within the cove to conduct kelp and fish counts (using transect tapes and video cameras).
