Landels-Hill Big Creek Reserve
24 May, 12 PM - 27 May, 12 PM
This work will involve a field geologist (Demian Nelson) and field assistant (Carina Edelman) accessing exposed bedrock (outcroppings) via established trails throughout the Landers-Hill Big Creek Reserve. All outcroppings will undergo rock identification and geologic structural data collection that does not require destructive methods. These data will be used to generate a detailed geologic map of the area. If the rock is suspected of containing garnet, monazite, xenotime, titanite, or zircon, we will collect it and return it to UCSB for petrographic, geochemical, and geochronologic analyses. All rock sampling will be done at inconspicuous locations on the outcrop and involve the removal of material approximately the size of a fist. This work will be completed over 2-4 days depending on the frequency of rock outcropping and the rock types discovered. A research application has been opened for this activity.
