Quail Ridge Reserve

29 Mar, 12 PM - 06 Apr, 06 PM

We would like to prototype some sampling approaches (hand augering, possible use of generator and rotary hammer auger if soil is hard or rocky, collecting soil cores), and identify a handful of suitable live and dead-from-fire oak sites to return to for a full sampling visit later on in April. If this goes well, we would collect some soil samples to transport back to the UC Davis campus to continue to develop our sample processing protocols. This likely will not involve a large volume of soil (the entire project we are envisioning would be roughly 6L of soil). We are also considering, though, trying to do a greenhouse experiment using oak seedlings planted into soils from more and less intensely burned sites. If we find suitable sites in this visit, and are allowed to collect some soil, we would need about 5 gallons of soil across each of six sites, ideally. This is not something that has to happen this week, though, so happy to discuss more logistics moving forward.
