Angelo Coast Range Reserve
22 Apr, 12 PM - 25 Apr, 12 PM
As described in the event description, NRing's yearly weekend retreat is the core of its programming, because it allows members to make connections outside of the physical department building. Integrating connections between math and social/non-academic life is what drives NRing's mission, because these connections directly help women, gender minorities, and other underrepresented mathematicians feel at home in the discipline, which has historically excluded them.
We plan to cook, play songs, and hike in small groups and as a team throughout the weekend. We also hold discussions about readings (related to math and demographics, work/life balance, and other social/educational issues), and offer informal support hours. These are extremely helpful as a resource for students with questions about starting out in the field, teaching for the first time, finding advisors, collaborating on papers, and navigating the many academic hurdles of the math PhD. They are also gppd forums for career advice, for members who are no longer students.
