In particular, Id like to record some active & passive seismic noise nearby the location of the seismographic recorder. The active noise will consist of 4-, 12-, & 20-lb hammer strikes to an aluminum plate placed on the ground. The passive noise component is simply the natural noise of the environment. An array of small 1 inch spikes are typically positioned into the soil to record the noises I have described. The recordings will generally take 6-8 hours & a medium sized SUV to transport equipment & a two-person crew, including me. There is very little to no disturbance to the environment. For example, here is a recent publication describing similar studies of recordings that I have lead: https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2013/1102/. This type of study is designed to have a direct impact on understanding the character of shaking induced by earthquakes.
