The Careers in Science (CiS) Intern Program is a multi-year, year-round science internship and youth development program for young people from groups typically underrepresented in the sciences. The Hastings 2019 Expedition is planned for March 25-28th, 2019. There will be approximately 26 youth and 4 adults in attendance.
During the expedition, interns will learn about and practice several field techniques and hear from professional scientists who are conducting research at the reserve. We hope that this trip will garner both an appreciation for one of Californias most beautiful spaces and stimulate interest in scientific fieldwork.
Examples of some of the activities and research include bird-watching and bird identification, insect collecting, a night hike with a built-in astronomy lesson, talks by scientists-in-residence on their current research, and learning about the social behavior of the local acorn woodpecker community.
