Hastings Natural History Reservation

31 May, 12 PM - 03 Jun, 12 PM

Working with Lourenco Martins and the SURE program at UC Berkeley, we will be demonstrating bat captures and best practices to students while conducting research. This will involve a sampling effort at two sites (one near the known roost sites in the rafters of the schoolhouse, a second by Big Creek). Sampling will consist of mist nets (3-12 meters wide, 1-2 meters tall) and 3mm wing punch biopsies. Best practices for field work with bats will be demonstrated to students; due to rabies concerns, students will not be allowed to handle bats unless they demonstrate a current (<2 years old) rabies titer certifying active immunity. In addition, we may use portable acoustic detectors to survey bats in other parts of the reserve.
