Voles will be trapped using Sherman live-traps baited with rolled oats and peanut butter and supplied with cotton batting for thermoregulation. Traps will be set in open, grassy areas in 5x5 grids, and/or along stream banks. We anticipate deploying a maximum of 100 traps. Traps will be opened at dusk and checked at dawn. Three adult Microtus montanus (montane vole) and 10 adult M. longicaudus (long-tailed vole) will be euthanized by cervical dislocation for tissue collection into RNALater. Voucher specimens and tissues will be deposited in the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology at UC Berkeley. All other captures will be released immediately.
