Steele/Burnand Anza-Borrego Desert Research Center

19 Jan, 07 PM - 19 Jan, 09 PM

High and Dry: Aquatic invertebrate adaptations to life in the desert. Kate S. Boersma, Assistant Professor, University of San Diego Desert-dwelling aquatic organisms have a wide range of adaptations that allow them to survive in an environment with no guarantee of water. In this course we will learn about the aquatic invertebrates of the American Southwest and how they thrive under extreme environmental conditions. On Saturday we will visit local aquatic habitats and sample Anza Borregos native aquatic invertebrate communities to see these often-overlooked animals in action. Kate and her team will lead the field class to two aquatic areas in Coyote Canyon where we will split into groups and assist with sampling. Participants should come prepared to spend the day outside. Hiking will include short, moderate walks. Please wear sturdy shoes that you dont mind getting a bit wet. High-clearance, 4WD vehicles are recommended; carpooling will be encouraged. The field class is limited to 16 participants.
