Ecology, genetics, and connectivity of Peninsular bighorn sheep in Baja California, Mexico Instructors/Speakers: Mathias Tobler, PhD and Lisa Nordstrom, PhD, Institute for Conservation Research, San Diego Zoo Global Field Instructor: Mike Puzzo, Environmental Scientist, California State Parks On Friday evening, Mathias Tobler, Ph.D. and Lisa Nordstrom, Ph.D. will discuss their research on Peninsular bighorn sheep in Baja California examining their population status, genetic structure, disease prevalence, and linkages across the US-Mexico border. Anza-Borrego Desert State Park has eleven wildlife guzzlers within its boundaries. Installed between 1969 and 1987, they utilize rainwater to provide a supplemental water source for the parks endangered bighorn sheep. Join Environmental Scientist Mike Puzzo the following day on a short hike near Pinyon Wash to visit a wildlife guzzler and learn about the bighorn sheep of our Park: how they survive on the scarce resources, seasonal movements, and their current status based on monitoring efforts. Youll also hear about the guzzlers' history, how they work, and how they are monitored and maintained through a partnership with the Safari Park. After our hike to the guzzler, the group will stop near Tamarisk Grove Campground to observe bighorn sheep (fingers crossed!) on the nearby hillsides and continue discussions on their natural history.
