Steele/Burnand Anza-Borrego Desert Research Center

23 Nov, 05 PM - 23 Nov, 09 PM

The Southern Emigrant Trail November 23-24 Instructor: Phil Brigandi Indians, Mexican soldiers, American 49ers, the famed Butterfield stages, cattlemen, and others all traveled the Southern Emigrant Trail. Unlike some Western trails that came and went, it was an important overland route in and out of Southern California for more than a century. The story of the trail captures much of the history of the Anza-Borrego region. This class will have a driving-heavy Saturday field tour. On Saturday, hikes will be short, but often on uneven terrain. Our travels will take us to various stops- mostly in the mid to southern end of the Park- to follow existing and past evidence of the route. About the Instructor: Phil Brigandi has been exploring the Anza-Borrego Desert in the field and in the archives since the 1970s. He is the author of Borrego Beginnings, a history of the development of the Borrego Valley, along with two dozen other books on the history of Orange, Riverside, and San Diego counties. Schedule Friday Lecture: November 23, 7:30-8:30 p.m. (refreshments provided) Saturday Field Class: 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
