Description

The Steele/Burnanad Anza-Borrego Desert Research Center is an 88 acre property that lies on the western edge of the Colorado Subdivision of the Sonoran Desert, in eastern San Diego County.  To the west, the Peninsular Range creates a rain-shadow that has produced habitat for ocotillo, smoketree, palo verde, and ironwood.  Animal communities include the protected Peninsular bighorn sheep and Mojave desert tortoise, desert horned lizards, and roadrunners.

The Research Center lies on the homelands of the Kumeyaay and Cahuilla.  Pronunciation: Kumeyaay (coo-ME-eye); Cahuilla (kah-WEE-ah). This statement is meant to serve as a first step in restoring our relationship with the people and this place. We are grateful to the land on which our reserve stands and for the opportunity to work here. As a facility managed by a land grant institution, we recognize and respect that the connection between the original stewards and the land is enduring. We believe in upholding treaties and support Native groups and Native American sovereignty.
