Merced Vernal Pools and Grassland Reserve
05 May, 10 AM - 05 May, 01 PM
QSB 244 is an upper division course on Phylogenetics, Speciation, and Macroevolution, and we would like to access the reserve to work on plant and animal identification, speciation, and phylogenetics in vernal pools, playa pools, and grassland habitats. In adavance of their visit, students will complete a tutorial using iNaturalist data to generate a phylogeny of MVPGR species (tutorial at https://github.com/OpenTreeOfLife/python-opentree/blob/main/docs/notebooks/gbif/GBIF_to_OpenTree.ipynb), and the field trip will give them the opportunity to see the species and the ecosystem in person. Our work will be strictly observational, and we will use the iNaturalist app to identify photos.
