Merced Vernal Pools and Grassland Reserve
24 Jul, 09 AM - 24 Jul, 12 PM
Through fieldwork utilizing quadrats for systematic identification, students will explore the diversity of plant, animal, and fungal species inhabiting vernal pools.
Please note that students will not collect any samples; they will identify species directly in the field or using the pictures taken.
The field activity will take place in the MVPGR Experimental Research Area (ERA).
Each group will receive wooden dowels and string to assemble 1 ft2 quadrat.
Within these quadrats, all observable plants, animals, fungi should be photographed. Students should use their phones to capture images of the locations and the species found within the quadrats. These photos will aid in species identification later using the SEEK feature from iNaturalist.
Additionally, students should utilize their phones to record the geographic coordinates of each quadrat location and make notes of any significant ecological observations.
