Conduct research - reading, writing, and field work - related to my approved sabbatical leave proposal. Research questions: For this project, I ask the following sets of research questions: 1) How do managers of wilderness articulate goals of active management (“ecological intervention/restoration”) in wilderness areas? What are the outcomes of ecological intervention in wilderness areas? 2) Is there evidence of a trade-off between “wildness” (presence of untrammeled and undeveloped qualities in wilderness) vs. “naturalness” (presence of historical biological communities and processes)? What factors or conditions influence whether such a trade-off exists? 3) How does the concept of wilderness fit with a contemporary view of human ecology? What are the different ways people value wilderness?
